Frequently Asked Questions
Why do we have memberships and not tickets to Praxis?
As an annual community celebration and co-learning opportunity, the Praxis Project seeks members, not customers. In becoming a member of the Praxis community, one must follow a few simple guidelines while on the private land that hosts us, and fulfill a volunteer "membershift" in exchange for access to workshops, music, camping and delicious vegan meals. This commitment brings to life the values of co-operation, response-ability, and care that underscore our gathering. Essentially we're creating a temporary village where we all have a part in every aspect. All members step up, whether it's playing music, cooking amazing food, facilitating a discussion, bringing an art installation, teaching a hands on lesson, or stocking poopers with TP.
Your membershift is a mandatory commitment. By having everyone on site participate in the daily activities necessary for the gathering, we keep our costs down and increase our capacity to organize, work together and build new systems. At Navdanya's Earth University, this practice is called "Shramdan", which is social service within and for the community for our mutual development and well-being.
What am I getting out of doing a membershift?
Your membershift is a community-building experience, engendering a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself and an expression of social responsibility. And it's fun!!! Because we operate as a membership-based organization, your volunteerism keeps the costs associated with Praxis to a minimum and ensures this learning is accessible to more people. In exchange for your membership fee and completing a membershift, you receive camping and meals, workshops and music. Get busy with everyone this year! Come learn a wide range of skills and have some potent discussions ... Walk our land, gain some new skills, learn of our land trust and break bread with us!
