The ARK
PROJECT DETAILS
STEP ONE
Partnering with locals. The Earth Education League – non-profit can link us to contractors, film our eco-renovation process and get the video ready to share online
STEP TWO
Update the already existing wood furnace & heat pump system in the basement (approved for rebates)
STEP THREE
Attach Solar System to the house & attach to grid power (applicable for rebates)
STEP FOUR
To ensure we have a good air seal in the house, invest in insulation and replace broken walls - we have decided to straw bale insulate the interior perimeter of the building, following the lead from a local straw bale master builder. Insulating the attic floor, and replacing three cracked windows and an old door or two. (rebates for straw, insulation, doors and windows approved!)
STEP FIVE
Install passive in floor heating on the main floor via a rooftop solar water heating unit. To seal our pipes in the floor we will use aircrete - exciting! (solar hot water heater is approved for rebates).
=========
MILESTONE -- we should be able to have completed a major step towards a passive heated house, not only becoming very energy efficient, but making the cost of living in the building very low in re to heat in the winter and cool air in the summer.
=========
STEP SIX
This is when we designate our meeting space and office space on the main floor, bringing in a special round table and painting a portion of the wall white for the donated projector.
STEP SEVEN
Create a member entrance on the main floor with a toilet and a sink.
=========
MILESTONE -- We will have the beginnings of a member run resource center. With local groups interested in space for office, research, internet and meeting space as well as laundry, workshop, pirate radio, and more! I believe we would have an event to celebrate our progress! STAY TUNED FOR THIS!
=========
STEP EIGHT
Engineer the land to prevent basement flooding. Use the displaced soil to plant a small future u-pick. This water management action will create near 1000 sq. feet of growing space near ready for the planting, forever changing the landscape
STEP NINE
Create a roof water collection system by installing eves trough. Roof water will drain into a series of raised and protected 1000L tote cisterns. Two outdoor showers will be created
STEP TEN
Electrical and residential finishing completed in the upstairs living area.
=========
MILESTONE -- Once complete we can offer a temporary residential space to future south Knowlesville neighbourhood landowners.
=========
STEP ELEVEN
Build a greenhouse attached to the south side of the house and the rear east side entrance, offering constant passive heat and creating inhouse growing space.
STEP TWELVE
Re-side the building with local harvested, rot-resistant clap boards.
=========
MILESTONE -- Ready for the next decade!
